Loon | Do the work

At dawn, a loon’s call carries across the lake. You hear it before you see the bird. The sound is distinct, alluring, and unfiltered. It communicates longing, joy, or celebration—and if it resonates with you, you are drawn in.

The call goes out to everyone near the lake, but only a select few take it to heart. They are the ones who align with the loon. The loon doesn’t adjust its voice to please every listener. It simply calls from its solitary stance on the lake.

Attracting clients can feel similar to solo architects and designers. When your business is just you, everything you do sends a message. Every meeting, phone call, or email sets a tone that will echo in the way your current clients talk to their colleagues, friends and family. These future clients may not even know they need you to help with their problem. They may not even be at the point of having a problem. The story of your services will reach them before they ever see you. Much like the loon’s call on a lake.

Only people who recognize themselves in your words will respond. They’re listening for how you think, how you show up, how you care. Referrals come with small hints about how well you listen, speak clearly, and act with professional know how.

As a solopreneur, your call is especially raw. There’s little separation between you and your work. Doing your work authentically and showing up each day speaks volumes. Keep doing good work. It is the best foundation to encourage future client calls.

As architects, we shape the way people experience space. We can influence how they live their daily life. Our design decisions improve how our clients cook, work, or make memories. That design calls out to future clients and will draw them to our services.
